After making a tutorial for a rectangular blinkie, I thought it would be fun to figure out
how to make blinkies in odd shapes. During the making of this blinkie, I have kept a
template and I will tell when to save copy as a template, so you can easily make more
blinkies with fewer steps later.
Lets get started :-)
1. Open a new transparent image, 300 by 300.
2. Set your foreground style box to black and your background style box to null.
3. This can be done using any of your preset shapes but for this tutorial I will
just pick one shape to work with. Click on your preset shapes tool and set to the following:
shape=octagon, line width 30, antialias checked, line style solid
4. Draw out your octagon to fill most of your image but not to hit up against edges.
Remember where you start and end your shape from as you will need this information later.
5. Add a new raster layer and change forground box to white, leave background style box
nulled and on preset shapes toggle box change line width to 10 and change line from solid
to a dotted line. (click on browser triangle beside line preview to a dotted or diamond line).
6. Draw out your octagon starting from where you started your first octagon and end it
where you stopped on first octagon. Now you will have this.
7. Duplicate layer 1 and rename layer 1 to base 1 and rename duplicate of layer 1 to
base2. Rename Layer2 to be called dashes1 and then duplicate that layer and rename it dashes2.
8. Now null base2 and dashes2 layers and merge visable base1 and dashes1. Rename this
merged layer to 1, then unnull dashes 2 layer.
9. Now this going to get a bit tricky here. Duplicate dashes2 then with mover tool move
this layer with your mover tool so you line up some of the dashes between dashes below.
We going to have to do this step a few times to get all sides matching. THen erase dashes that
are not in line with dashes below.
10. Duplicate the dashes2 layer again and move it new duplicated layer to the top and then move
it so you match two more side and then erase the dashes from this layer that are not in line.
11. Duplicate the dashes2 layer again and move it new duplicated layer to the top and then move
it so you match two more side and then erase the dashes from this layer that are not in line.
12. Duplicate the dashes2 layer again and move it new duplicated layer to the top and then move
it so you match last two side and then erase the dashes from this layer that are not in line.
13. Now lets see how it looks. Null layer 1, base2 and dashes2 and merge visable all the other layers.
Then unnull base2. You may see some pieces of white you did not erase, so use your eraser
tool to clean it up. Once tidied up for stray white colour, check to see if you have any
gaps in your dashes, if so, repeat previous steps to fill any missing gaps.
14. Mine looks okay so I will delete the the layer called dashes2. Then with layer1 still nulled, merge visable all the other
layers and rename this new merged layer so now called 2.
15. Time to stop and make this a template for future blinkies..so go shift D on your keyboard to make
a dupicate new image of this, save it in folder you can find it again, give it a name,
keep it in PSP format, then close.
16. Back to this first image...now if you want to have border other colour in black click on your
magic wand and click on black area and flood fill it with a different colour. Do this to both
layers so both borders same colour.
17. Click inside the transparent middle of one of the borders so its selected.
(ants marching inside) then go selections, modify, expand by 2 pixels. Add a new layer
and open a graphic you want to use for center or a gradient or a pattern, to decorate.
Select none to kill ants and on this layer you can add a font to it or anything you like.
Once decorated, duplicate this layer and merge one frame layer with a decorated layer
(making sure the frame layer is above the decorated layer) so you end up with two frames
both looking identical except the dots will be different.
18. Rename your layers 1 and 2 and save.
19. Time to animate :-) Open animation shop.
20. Go to FILE, OPEN and browse to where you have your image and open. Now you should see
your image on your workspace in two frames. Click on VIEW ANIMATION to see how it looks.
21.@nbsp; There is too much transparent background on mine so go file, select all then click
on the crop tool and crop your frames to get rid of excess background
22. Now with both frames selected, go to Animation, resize animation and make your blinkie
smaller, less than 200 pixels is best.
23. Now go file, export frames to PSP and sharpen both frame layers. Then go Edit, update back
to animation shop and close frame image on PSP.
24. Go VIEW ANIMATION, and if you are happy with it, close view animation, then go to
FILE, SAVE, name your blinkie, keep in gif format and you are done!
Here is my completed blinkie.
